Causes of Scars

There are a number of ways one can get a scar. Of the most obvious is physical injury. If the skin is torn, punctured, frozen or burned, some tissue may die. As a result, the body will work to replace the lost tissue with new ‘scar’ tissue, resulting in a scar. Many people over the age of ten have at least one scar - falling off a bike and scraping your knee, bumping your head, accidentally cutting yourself with a sharp object - there are literally thousands of ways to damage your skin and get a scar.

The second leading cause of scarring is surgery. Almost all surgery is considered invasive - the surgeon needs to damage tissue in order to get to the area that needs surgery (such as making an incision in the skin to get to the heart or the gall bladder). Surgeries of all kinds can leave scars, including cosmetic surgery. Although cosmetic surgeons can usually hide the resulting scars, they do exist. Because the incisions are ‘clean’ as is the case with a scalpel, surgical scars can be much less noticeable then scars due to injury. However, some major surgeries require the incision to be closed with large staples, which can leave large amounts of scar tissue visible.

Disease can also leave visible scars. Many diseases can cause severe dermatological conditions including lesions, fungal growths and areas affected by bacteria. Someone who has HIV for example, could develop a number of dermatological conditions and not have enough immune system strength to heal them properly. Measles and Chicken Pox are another example of a disease that can leave scarring, depending on the severity of the diseases symptoms. Other examples include extreme cases of eczema and severe acne.

Examples of Scar Causes:

  • Trauma to the epidermis (skin)

  • Surgical procedures both medical and cosmetic

  • Certain diseases that affect the skin
