What are Scars?
What are scars?
Scars (medical: cicatrices) are simply areas of fibrous skin that have replaced normal skin after injury. Because scares are considered unattractive, scar removal products and techniques have become popular. This article will discuss methods of scar removal as well as provide information on scars in general.
When the part of the skin is injured, the body immediately works to repair the wounded area. White blood cells and platelets are sent to area to clot the wound and fight infection, while skin cells multiply to replace the old skin. The replacement skin has high levels of collagen, a protein produced by the body and used in cosmetic surgeries.
The resulting tissue is called scar tissue because it is not of the same quality as regular skin. Scar tissue is usually of a different color; sometimes white, brown, pink or red. The tissue itself does not contain hair follicles or sweat glands like regular skin tissue. This is why large scars in the head area are easily seen with people with short hair. Another difference between scar tissue and regular skin tissue is the usual absence of nerve cells. Many large scars are not as sensitive to touch / heat / cold as is normal skin. In some cases, areas of scar tissue are completely numb to any sensation but may itch occasionally. Another difference between regular tissue and scar tissue is that scar tissue is not affected by ultraviolet rays (does not tan or burn in the sun). The success of a scar removal product or technique is somewhat dependent on the scar’s qualities.
Scars form differently on different people depending on injury, age and the status of the immune system. Where some people’s injuries may heal within days leaving simple scar tissue, other people’s injuries may take weeks or months to heal and their scars may be much more noticeable. Scar removal can help these people greatly.
For the purpose of this article, we will focus on dermatological scars, or scars on the visible skin. Scars can also be found inside the body on organ tissues and muscle tissues. A common cause of heart failure is the scarring of the heart muscle after a heart attack, which weakens the muscle.
