Types of Scars

There are many different types of scars depending on certain conditions. These are known as abnormal scars. Knowing what type of scar one has can help the scar removal process.

Some examples of abnormal scarring are:

Contractures:

Contractures are the result of burn injuries. In many cases, when tissue is lost due to severe burns, the skin will contract to heal the wound, causing a scar under pressure, and giving it a pulled taught appearance.

Keloid Scars:

Keloid scars are the result of scar tissue growing outside the boundaries of the original wound. Keloid scars are excess collagen due to an overproduction of new scar tissue in response to the wound. Although completely harmless, keloid scars can be very itchy. Some people are genetically prone to keloid scarring as are people with darker skin types.

Hypertrophic Scars:

These scars form within the boundaries of the original wound. They differ from regular scars because they are usually red in appearance and are usually slightly elevated. It may take months or years for a hypertrophic scar to ‘heal’ to a regular scar.

Recessed scars:

Recessed scars, commonly seen with severe acne or Chicken Pox, is a scar that is recessed or crater shaped. The indent in the skin is the result of fat and muscle under the wound being damaged or lost.

Stretch Marks:

Stretch marks (medical: striae) are also considered scars. Stretch marks are the result of the skin being stretched, such as in cases of pregnancy, rapid weight gain and growth spurts. When the skin is stretched thin, the body works to reinforce the stretched skin with new skin to help it remain strong. The resulting ‘reinforced’ areas have a slight scar-like appearance and can go away after a couple of years depending on their severity.
